Letter written to "my dearest sarah," gives her battle details, noting that they are still on one side of the Rappannock River and that the Confederates are on the other. Describes his brigade, which is commanded by Generals Amiel Whipple and Samuel Carroll. States that Carroll is called "a perfect Bull Dog to fight we can he hear him command a mile... you ought to see us jump for we are all afraid of him... " Tells her that he would like very much to see her and that he will hold every promise sacred. Reports that Clement, Sarah's brother, is in fine health. Envelope is addressed to Miss Sarah Hays in Donegal, Westmoreland Country, Pennsylvania. It is likely that Sarah Hays and William Logan married soon after this letter was written, as the following letters refer to her as his wife.
