At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports Grier is not feeling well and is very tired from all the field work he's doing. Informs him they all went to church and heard a good sermon. Says Bell looks well and will begin teaching soon. States the potato crop is the best ever with thirty-one bushels. Updates him on the neighbors. Letter continues the following morning. Envelope includes a three cent stamp.
