At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Addresses letter "Friend Joe" and thanks him for the recent letter. Reports on several parties he attended recently and comments he's "...having a grand time..." with all the women. Speculates on several relationships and whether they will marry. Informs him that Bell has rheumatism in her arm. Closes the letter with "Harra for Lincoln." Includes a three cent stamp on the envelope.
