At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports from camp to his brother. Speaks of receiving a letter from an unknown woman. Writes he is very thankful that his health is good, as many of his fellow soldiers' health is not well. Remarks, "Our Co is getting very small one by one our numbers is passing away, and the question arises who will be next."
