At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes from the "Rear of Vicksburg," reporting that "little firing has been done for several days on either side. We are just lying here keeping the Rebs. in & tormenting them once in a while with a few Shells. It is hard to tell when they will be willing to surrender but I don't think they can hold out very long."
