At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter to cousin includes a description of an excerpt describing their father's history from "Mrs. Carlisle & Family." Writes that J.M. is probably better posted about "National affairs" than he is, and there isn't any new news to report besides engagements. There is a small hole through the middle of the page causing minor text loss.
