At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs his cousin that he has married "one of Ills' best virgins. It was said by many that she was the most beautiful bride that they had ever seen. She was dressed in Sky Blue Silk, her fair fell in beautiful curls down her neck... I love her. Yes I love her." Apologizes for not telling him about the marriage sooner, but proclaims "I was not certain I had her, and I did not wish to say anything to anyone for fear that false reports might be circulated..."
