At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Communicates to his sister that he is disappointed that she and their mother did not come to Washington, and that Isaiah, possibly his sister's suitor, and his family were upset as well. Describes his Christmas dinner, detailing that they had turkey and mince pie. Informs her that he was sent out yesterday with the Army of the Potomac with many prisoners. Reports that M.K., possibly a family friend or a romantic interest of his, sends her love.
