At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tells his sister that he is still at the hospital with a cold. Writes that he is sorry Louisa, possibly another sister, has been sick. Reports that inspectors are coming on Monday to decide who will go back on duty or be transferred to the Invalid Corps. Written on stationery with "US Army General Hospital, Newton University, Baltimore" letterhead.
