Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs an unknown recipient: "Eccles has returned is unable to [?] or do anything else- Smashed by his produce speculations- This was to me a totally unexpected event- I may save it in time, but doubt it. Expecting to be at Lexington must constitute my apology for not writing earlier..." Docket states: "T. P. Moore- Private soldier in 1812 member of Congress many years- One of Genl [Jenkins?] pets- Sent Minister to Bogota..."

Moore served in the War of 1812, as a member of the Kentucky State house of Representatives, as a United States Representative 1823-1829, as Minister Plenipotentiary to New Grenada 1829-1833, and as lieutenant colonel in the war with Mexico.
