At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Encloses the autograph of Admiral Dewey as she requested and a cap ribbon from one of the sunken Spanish gunboats (neither is included). Says there has been a high demand for the ribbons as souvenirs. Asks to be remembered to Mr. Frank and says he thinks fondly of their time together at her house in Jamaica. Written while aboard the USS "Olympia".
