At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by retired Rear Admiral Worden to Peck who asked for the addresses of Loyall Farragut, the son of Admiral David Farragut, and A.R.S. Foote, the son of Admiral Andrew Foote. Worden says that Loyall lives at 113 East 36th Street in New York City and that A.R.S. Foote lives at 816 15th Street, NW in Washington D.C.
