At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Lavallette as Commander in Chief of the African Squadron to Lieutenant Foote. Forwards a letter he found in his papers (not included). Hopes Foote had a short passage and a pleasant meeting with his family and friends. Document has been torn in upper right corner and is close to being torn along the folds. Written while aboard the "USS Germantown".
