At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper entitled “Town and Country Magazine or Universal Repository of Knowledge, Instruction and Entertainment” dated January and February of 1771. “Town and Country Magazine or Universal Repository of Knowledge, Instruction and Entertainment” was a monthly publication originated by A. Hamilton in Great Britain. The magazine featured essays, poems, and current event articles. Additionally, the magazine spoke on both public and foreign affairs including the market changes of grain and stock as well as the plans for a Spanish attack on a British port Egmont in the Falklands region. Contains other forms of media such as engraved plates and a political cartoon with accompanying article about a suspicious meeting between the Duke of Bedford and another individual.
