At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Printed by Roger C. Weightman. Includes letters and lists related to the 10 September 1813 Battle of Lake Erie. Offers a detailed account of the battle, in which United States Commander Perry defeated a more numerous British fleet. Includes lists of Americans who were wounded in the battle, as well as letters related to the battle from Perry, Commodore Hull, Naval Senior Officer McCall, Commodore Bainbridge, and Naval Secretary Jones. Otis, Secretary of the Senate, writes that this document was printed for use of the Senate.
