At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mary Gorms indentures herself "freely, volintarily, and of her own accord" to John Smith for five years. She had previously been in the service of Thomas Williams. Smith must provide her with food and lodging. Signed by Smith and Gorms, with her mark. Also signed by Middlesex County Court Recorder Edwin Thacker.
