At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Grant, Commander of the Army and Department of the Tennessee, writes to General Sherman, Commander of the Fifteenth Corps, Army of the Tennessee. Discusses the safety of supply trains. Reports that he will send Captain William Silliman Hillyer to load wagons and transport them to Sherman so Sherman's brigade can escort them to their destination. Includes an initialled post script.
