Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mentions that business and ill health have kept him from writing. Congratulates him on the arrival of the French fleet and the minister. Informs that the fleet has gone to Rhode Island. Addressed to "Dear General." Washington is suggested as a possible recipient based upon Arnold's comments about the French fleet. The letter has suffered severe damage and lacks its address leaf.
