At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses investments and his financial affairs. Informs that he will invest $5000 in the Sycamore local mines and will be involved in the organization of the company. States he is currently receiving troops for muster out and final pay. Comments that he is very busy as 2,500 come each day and he expects 25,000 in total. On stationery printed with "Office Chief U. S. Must'g and Disb'g Officer, Western Division of Pennsylvania."
