At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Compilation of laws created "By Authority of Congress" and edited by Matthews. Title page states Matthews was an attorney and a law clerk in the Confederate Department of Justice. Published in Richmond by the Confederate Congress and printed by R.M. Smith the printer to Congress. Pages 1-9 contain Constitution of Provisional Government. Pages 11-23 contain official Constitution of Confederate States of America. Pages 27-286 contain Public Acts of the Provisional Congress. Text of Indian treaties at pages 290-411. Index paginated as i-xlviii at the back of the book. Purple stamp from Adjudant General's Office Division of Confederate Archives on title page dated 14 July 1888.
