At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lieutenant T. Otis Baker served in Co. B, 10th Mississippi Infantry, C.S.A. The diary covers 9 October 1862-2 August 1863. The diary includes descriptions of regiment's progress and moves, descriptions of various battles (including Vicksburg, Gettysburg, and Port Hudson), and information about camp life and food rations. He discusses Northern and Southern war politics, including the Emancipation Proclamation and draft riots. The diary also includes discussions of virtues, religion, and self-improvement. It is primarily written in pencil and has some touch-ups.
