At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Autograph manuscript signed. Written mostly in pencil, with some entries in pen. Stiles served in a 3-month regiment, in the 11th Vermont until December 1862, and joined again for service in the 11th Vermont heavy artillery. His unit served in West Virginia for the first part of year and joined the Army of the Potomac in May.
