At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Walter states that while he was in Philadelphia he was nominated for a Commissioner of the Treasury. If he should be chosen for this position, he would have to give a security deposit, and asks his father if he would agree to be his security. He also notes that Congress will meet in New York, and that men have been nominated for the Federal Court. Docketed on address leaf.
