At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Abraham Ten Broeck writes to introduce the bearer of the letter, John Wat[t]ers, who wishes to rent Robert, Jr.'s house in Albany. Ten Broeck states that Wat[t]ers is a decent man who keeps an orderly house, and can pay the rent up front if requested. Docketed on address leaf.
