At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Henry informs his father that business has stagnated due to the scarcity of money. He also notes that the store houses in Boston are full of dry goods, but he is hesitant to purchase now, as he believes it wise to hold on to one's money. Docketed on verso.
