Yates expresses wonder at Dudley Davis's criticism of himself, and believes that Davis has made these remarks out of desperation and a desire to blame some one for his troubles. Yates therefore advises Robert, Jr. to stay away from him "for fear (if he should sink) he might lay hold and take part of our substance along with him."
