At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The document holds Matthyse Smith and his son Matthyse Smith, Jr. responsible for repaying a debt to Robert Livingston, Jr. within a designated period of time. With ANS on p.2 by Robert Livingston, Jr. stating that the above bond is "discharged by another bond given by Mathys Smith, Adam Smith, and Philip Bonessel, dated 24 November 1772.
