At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Robert, Jr. writes that the recent deaths of both his mother and his eldest son Philip have been most difficult to endure, and he hopes that the familial bond between him and his brother remain in tact. He then invites his brother to come and live among all of their siblings, where he will have money, land, and a secure occupation. Robert, Jr. also states that his sons Walter and Peter are succeeding in their education.
