Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

John expresses concern for the health of Robert, Jr.'s son Philip, and wishes Philip could come to New York to see a physician. He explains that the whole family is quite sorrowful over the death of their brother in law Henry Hansen, and are troubled with finding a way to take care of his numerous outstanding debts. At the bottom of the letter he adds that war with France seem inevitable. Docketed on address leaf.
