At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Brothers Livingston and Alexander ask Robert, Jr. if he will assist Elisha Sheldon in settling his account with them. Followed by a postscript signed by William Alexander, in which he implores Robert, Jr. "not to let me want this that you engaged to furnish," as he is expecting an important visit from Governor Shirley.
