At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Philip explains that he is awaiting the construction of a forge at the Manor, and states that the iron works will be a most profitable enterprise if it is well managed. He also expresses his regret for a hurricaine in Jamaica that ruined many ships, and hopes that his flour made it safely ashore.
