At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Robert, Jr. took out the insurance policy in his name to cover a round trip voyage of the Brigantine Ancram from New York to St. Christopher. On p.3 George J. Moore signed for receipt of payment from Robert, Jr. for the policy, dated 4 May 1741.
