At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

John describes how he has been stricken with a most painful case of gout, and that he has concocted his own medicine to ease the pain. He also apologizes for having to postpone a visit due to illness, and explains some business conducted with his mother in law, Sarah Knight. Docketed on verso.
