At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

John complains that someone tampered with a shipment of beer in order to swindle him and his father, and mentions some financial worries. He regrets the painful death of his wife, but explains that he plans to marry again as soon as it would be decent, and asks that his father oblige him with his blessing.
