At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tripp writes, "I am well and hope you are enjoying the same blessing we hav marched from alizabeth town to camp nevins 13 miles when ther was 16 thousand marched from this plase on tords [sic] old Buckner [General Simon Buckner]..." Discusses sending money. Written on stationery with an image of George B. McClellan, accompanied by the text: "The Napoleon of America."
