At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bright, a United States Senator from Indiana, declines an offer from Burr, Chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee, to "visit Connecticut and address the Democracy of that state during the present Canvass." Bright served as a U.S. senator from Indiana from 1845-1862.
