Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Says she was supposed to send letters to the American consul at Gibraltar before, but now asks her not to send any letters until she hears from him again. Says they have orders to leave Algeciras for Cadiz on 1 September. After that it is assumed they will go to Madeira, St. Thomas, and then Key West. Sends his love to the rest of the family. Letter sent by the store ship "Release."
