At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Smith, Governor of Rhode Island, informs President Lincoln that "the first notice which Captain Ethan A. Jenks received of the commission on the charge made against him was the order dismissing him from Service, while on duty at the Siege of Vicksburg, and also that the charge is untrue."
