At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Bliss states that Captain Ethan A. Jenks has received authority to appear before the Board of Examination. Recommends Jenks to the Board, stating that "For bravery, energy, coolness, and devotion to the cause of the Union, he is unsurpassed by any Officer in the Reg't." Written at Camp Burnside.
