At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He reports improvement among the officers at the last school of instruction. But there is one defect in that there is a lack of promptitude in the execution of commands. It is also difficult to get the men to march in lock step. Though he recommends the officers of the 27th regiment for promotion.
