At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The Confederates have been fighting internally since the Battle of Chickamauga; "I believe they will disband completely." Cornelius Hanvy has recovered. He requests cotton shirts to keep away the army lice. She may exchange the money he sends for silver but "must not be afraid of the greenbacks for they are as good as the gold."
