At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes from the Asylum Hospital that he was wounded in the leg, but should return to his regiment in a few days. Notes he was wounded at Jonesborough, Georgia on 31 August 1864. Reports that there were 3,000 wounded at Jonesborough and that Atlanta, Georgia has surrendered.
