At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Filled-in form documenting Stanley's discharge from service in the 107th New York Volunteers. Signed by Buttrick as Captain and Assistant Adjutant General. Made in accordance with General Orders No. 77. Stamped "Bounty Paid" on 8 November 1867. Discharged near Washington, D.C. With a blank "Oath of Identity" on the verso.
