On Senate stationery. Senator Sherman does not feel at liberty "to advise Gen Harrison as to his cabinet," but hopes he will include some Southerners. John Sherman (1823-1900), William Tecumseh's brother was a prominent US Senator from Ohio (1861-1877). He also served as Secretary of the Treasury (1877-1881) and Secretary of State (1890-1898). Sherman writes: "Your letter is received enclosing that of Governor Brown, which I now return to you…I do not feel at liberty to advise Gen Harrison as to his Cabinet unless he should desire my opinion. I have hopes that he would select one or two members of his Cabinet from the South ... and he ought to select these after conferring with the Republicans of the South."
