At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Stating that he is aware of the situation of sailors whose term has expired, and enclosing an address [not present] on the subject. Written in response to a letter sent to Farragut by sailors on the U.S.S. Lackawanna. Written on board the U.S.S. Hartford, off Pensacola, Florida, during the Union blockade of major Southern ports. On "Western Gulf Squadron" stationery.
