At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

From an assistant surgeon of the U. S. Volunteer Navy, confirming illnesses of two men under Marchand's command. "I hereby respectfully call a Medical Survey on Pat McGough…affected with synavitis of hip joint: and James McGuire has Typhoid fever." Letter is approved over the signature of E. W. Henry as Lieutenant Commander. Written on board the U.S.S. Owasco, off Galveston, Texas, during the Union blockade.
