At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Copy of a letter discussing naval strategy and suggesting that Pensacola, Florida be warned, in case a Confederate ram tries a sneak attack there. Says the rebel rams Tennessee and Baltic are nearby. Written on board the U.S.S. Calhoun, in the Mississippi Sound, during the blockade of Mobile Bay. Farragut was the first Admiral in the United States navy and Commander-in-Chief of the U. S. Navy during the Civil War.
