At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In his letter to his daughter, Flitner speaks of her education. Flitner also apologizes for his inability to give a detailed description of his present location, citing that he has rarely been off the ship to explore the area, which he calls Gotenburg. The top right corner of the letter is missing resulting in the last number in the year being lost. What remains is August 8, 186.
