At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

M. E. Flitner writes a letter to her daughter in which she mentions that her husband was prevented from leaving port by a storm, the same storm that Z. Flitner himself talks about in his letter to his daughter GLC02669.86. Flitner also mentions a recent snow storm, and that she is glad that her daughter lives so near the school, indicating that her daughter was in attendance at the time this letter was written.
