At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly to Colonel Edward Jay Allen of the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry. No year indicated. General Fremont writes, "...I am sincerely gratified by the regard of yourself and your command. It will certainly give me pleasure to have you with me and so soon as I am ordered into the field I will do that best I can to have you there too." Notes that he plans to return to St. Louis, Missouri (Fremont was removed from command of the Department of the West in November 1861).
